We had a much better year than last year when it comes to loss control. Our Insurance Costs are down and we didn’t have many major insurance claims. Our Incidents have gone up some, but I feel that is a direct result of better incident reporting by most Supervisors. I would like to thank the Supervisors that take the time to fill out the Incident Reports and get them to the office in a timely manner. The Incident Reports are invaluable when it comes to identifying trends and investigating accidents.

Most everyone did a great job of holding his or her weekly toolbox talks. Some of the crews even did a toolbox talk for each job. Great job and thanks to everyone for sharing the safety topics with their employees.

I have seen great improvement throughout the company when it comes to wearing hard hats and safety glasses. There are even some paving crews wearing hard hats most of the time. There have been a lot of employees stepping up to the plate and setting a positive example for other employees. I want to congratulate and thank everyone that goes above and beyond what is required when it comes to their safety and the safety of others.

We had over 400 employees go the entire season without an avoidable or unavoidable incident. Congratulations to everyone that went the entire season without an incident.

Wouldn’t you think that if over 400 employees went the entire season without an incident we could all go without an incident for the entire season? Think about that! No Incidents! Oh yeah, I forgot again, we need to be realistic and expect incidents to happen and we do expect them to happen, and guess what; they happen!!! They used to figure how many employees would be killed on a construction project in the estimated cost. Why don’t we still do that? Because nobody expects anyone to be killed on a construction job any more! So why do we find it acceptable for equipment to be damaged and people to be injured? We can’t continue with “This is the way we’ve always done it” type attitude because no one is driving a B Model or using calculators instead of computers any more. What do you expect for next year? It’s all up to you!!!

Again congratulations and thanks to everyone that takes their safety and the safety of others seriously and is pro-active by setting a shining example for others.

Have a safe and happy holiday season.
