Manatts' Contribution to Pavement Excellence!

Stellar Performance at 38th Annual
Concrete Paving "Blue Ribbon" Awards

ICPA Award Winners (Left to Right):
1st Row:  Mike Viehdorfer

3rd Row:  John (Mort) Frahm, Morgan Vanderwilt, Tim Wall, Steve Naderman, & Alan Manatt

The Iowa Concrete Paving Association and the Iowa Department of Transportation proudly continued a tradition at the 38th Annual Concrete Paving Workshop by recognizing and presenting awards to contracting authorities, contracting firms, and most importantly, the personnel responsible for the “best” portland cement concrete pavements constructed during 2001. The presentation of awards for outstanding construction contributes to a high standard of workmanship and product that Manatt’s, Inc. is proud of!

Manatt’s, Inc. was the only contractor to win 3 awards at the ICPA convention! We received awards for the following projects:

  • Story County

  • Wright Brothers Blvd., Phase I

  • 2000/2001 Arterial Street Rehabilitation Program in Ames

Safety Always Priority at Manatt's, Inc.
Burt Ostert

I would first like to congratulate all the Manatt's Inc. employees that completed last season without an incident. I would especially like to congratulate the three employees that had their names drawn from the pool of incident free employees! The drawing winners each received a $1000.00 safety incentive check for their safety efforts. The recipients of the checks were Richard Tingley from the Metro Shop, Ken Renken from the Grundy Center Ready Mix Plant and Jerry Johnson from the Trucking Division. CONGRATULATIONS AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

There seems to be some confusion on exactly how the Manatt's Inc.

Safety drawing program works so I will explain how it works.

Each month, with the exception of January, six employees names are drawn from a pool of employees in the field that have not had an incident in the previous twelve months. Each of these employees receive a $200.00 Safety Incentive Check from the Safety Director as long as the employees are following Manatt's Inc. Safety Policies when the check is delivered and consistently practices safety policies and practices. There is also one name drawn from the office personnel pool for a $100.00 Safety Incentive Check.

At the end of the construction season the names of all Manatt's Inc. employees that have not had an incident for the entire season are put in a pool and three names are drawn for a $1000.00 Safety Incentive Check. These Safety Incentive checks are to be earned by following Manatt's Inc. Safety Policies and practicing safe work habits! This program is not intended to be a lottery program for all employees! The names of the monthly recipients will be posted in the Manatt’s Mirror.

With that cleared up, I hope, I would like to re-cap our annual Supervisor’s Safety Meeting and go over some of the changes regarding the Safety.

The Supervisor’s Safety Meetings were held on February 26th and 27th in Brooklyn. We had informative speakers that covered many topics including D.O.T. Issues, Wellness, Personal Safety, Drug and Alcohol Awareness, Loss Control and Supervisor’s Responsibilities.

Mike Manatt did a Power Point Presentation outlining the company goals for this year. As far as Safety is concerned, the goals for this year include employee training, identifying claim types and frequencies, identifying claims by division, improved reporting and communication, an increased emphasis on safety awareness and implementing more safety committees, fashioned after the Ames Safety Committee. These goals are designed to reduce claims, which will result in fewer employee injuries and incidents therefore resulting in cost savings for everyone.

We introduced the new “Incident Report” that will be used to report all incidents. Supervisors are required to fill it out and have the employee or employees involved sign the report and then fax it to the Brooklyn Office. Nancy still needs to be called on all incidents, but the “Incident Report” needs to be sent in within 24 hours.

Also, thanks to Nate Hopwood and Nancy Ollinger, we also introduced a report that breaks claims down by division. When we have all the bugs worked out of this report we will be able to identify types, frequency and cost of incidents per division.

We will be able to give each Supervisor a report or graph to show how their division is doing compared to other divisions and give them an idea where we need to focus our training.

I did show graphs at the meeting showing safety trends and comparisons by division to give everyone information on how each division stacks up on claims and cost.

I would like to recognize the PCC Division based out of Brooklyn for taking the initiative to start their own Safety Committee to enhance safety awareness in their division.

The members of the Safety Committee are Jason Spooner, Monte Hurst, Alan Manatt, Jeremy Holland, Jim Shafer, Marvin Shaw, Rita Eichhorst, Duane McDonald and Burt Ostert.

The committee will be investigating incidents and training employees on safety policies as well as OSHA Requirements.

If you have any concerns or ideas please contact someone on the Safety Committee. We need employee input to improve our safety awareness.
